Starbucks Union

Despite Wichita having a plethora of delicious, local coffee shops, Starbucks still has a strangle hold on Americans.

One of the busiest (and worst located) Starbucks is at Rock and Central. BTW if you’re one of the jive turkeys that stops at the “don’t block thru traffic” sign heading east down Central to turn into this location, shame on you.

It is currently under construction for a remodel until 9/1.

This location is also the first Starbucks location in Wichita (third in Kansas) to unionize after a 9-6 vote (in which 15 of the 30 employees voted) on Tuesday.

What does it mean for these employees? It will allow workers to fight for better pay and better benefits.

Arcade is Expanding

Have you got your ‘80’s fix at The Arcade in Old Town? It’s been open since 2017, but it’s about to move and get an upgrade.

This fall it’ll move from 139 N Mead St to 906 E Third St into a new warehouse that’s currently being renovated. If you’re wondering where that is, it’s just north of B&C Barbecue.

Soon it will serve food and alcohol while keeping the family-friendly vibes.

Small Business Assistance

The WSU Office of Innovation and New Ventures has received $1 million to form the Small Business Digital Transformation (SBDT) Program.

The goal here is to help the small businesses in Wichita and build a talent development pipeline for tech trained employees by involving students.

Sports betting in Kansas

Sports betting - coming to a casino near you (and online). So, is it actually legal in Kansas now?

Where does Kansas stand?

May 2022 - Governor Laura Kelly signed the sports betting bill into law
July 1 - it became a law
September 1 (one week ahead of the 2022 NFL Season) - you can make in-person (at one of the 4 state owned casinos) or online bets

House Incentives

A pilot program was up for discussion at the City Council this week regarding incentives for the construction of homes in Wichita’s neglected central neighborhoods.

This could waive new home construction, renovation or other work that requires a permit up to $10,000 in building permit fees.

Everyone thinks they are the king (or queen) of the boards when it comes to backyard BBQs, but it’s time to step aside and watch the Pros.

The American Cornhole League Pro Shootout takes place at WSU’s Charles Koch Arena tomorrow at 9AM. It is free to enter.
