TOGETHER WITH

Good morning Wichita!

Something that doesn't always get the attention it deserves is how diverse Wichita is.

Today is Indigenous Peoples' Day in Wichita. This month (9/15 - 10/15) is Hispanic Heritage Month.

Let's continue to shine light and celebrate the diversity in our city.

In today's Wichita Weekly Update:

  • Indigenous Peoples' Day
  • Hispanic Heritage Month
  • Gallery Alley

Let's get to it!

- Landon Huslig

P.S. Happy Birthday to Jason!

NEWS

Indigenous Peoples’ Day

October 10th is now known as Indigenous Peoples’ Day after Mayor Whipple made it official as of October 4th.

The holiday commemorates the shared history and culture of Native Americans.

This past weekend, there was a celebration at the Mid-America All-Indian Museum.

TOGETHER WITH 2UAUTO

This month we want to shine a light on on a local business for Hispanic Heritage Month.

2UAuto is a business you don't know you need until you've used them (and then there's no going back).

They keep your environment clean to help you focus better on the things that matter to you.

2UAuto helps you keep your car clean and they come to you, whether your car is at home or work.

Schedule today. Support a local Hispanic owned business.

BUSINESS

Opening

Closing

Sungrano Pizza

Sungrano Pizza at Social Tap on WSU campus is what the kids would call “fire”.

They will soon offer New York style and Detroit style pizza.

STARTUP

Wichita Startup Week

Wichita Startup Week (WSW) officially kicks off today and goes through Friday at Groover Labs.

In it’s first year last year, WSW was a huge success. This has people wondering if Wichita could be the next tech hotspot.

While we’re talking startups, if you’re interested in taking the next step, look into the ignitor program.

CIVIL

Upgrade at McConnell

McConnell Air Force Base will be getting close to $3 million in computer upgrades.

LOCAL

Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month started on September 15th and ends this Saturday on October 15th.

There are still a couple events in Wichita to celebrate including:

  • Como Establecer Creditor con HIRE on 10/13 at Evergreen Community Center
  • Vamos Nomar Fiesta on 10/15 at Nomar Plaza with live music, food trucks, and vendors.

Overcrowding at Southeast HS

Southeast High added 150 kids this year (up to ~2200 students total). This brings concerns about potential overcrowding in the future. For comparison:

  • East High - 2300 students
  • Northeast Magnet - 630 students
  • Other schools fall between 1300 - 2000

A big increase in students is due to new homes being built in the southeast part of Wichita. The city is discussing ways to address the concerns.

Empty Bowls Wichita

Empty Bowls is an “international, artist-driven movement to help end hunger”.

This is a multi-stage event that kicked off with a “Build-a-Bowl” event that took place on September 24th.

The bowls made there will be donated and used at the Chili Cook-Off at WSU on October 22nd.

The Lord’s Diner

The Lord’s Diner is a ministry dedicated to serving meals to people in need in downtown Wichita.

They have now reopened their doors for indoor seating as of 10/3. This is the first time in more than 2 years.

Wichita Community Foundation

The Wichita Community Foundation is moving to Broadway Autopark at 303 S Broadway early next year.

The Wichita Community Foundation (WCF) serves as a catalyst to “create lasting legacies by partnering with people, families, and organizations to devote resources to causes that matter”.

ICT EXTRA

Gallery Alley

Have you ever seen the giant spider in the alleyway downtown near Naftzger Park?

That is known as “Gallery Alley”. It reopened in July 2021 and includes interactive, sensory art installations. It was just recognized with a “Downtown Achievement Award of Excellence” from the International Downtown Association.

Kirsten Shannon Art

Catch local artist Kirsten Shannon at The Ice House (just east of Union Station at 165 S Rock Island).

Her art show started on 10/7 and runs until 10/28.
